This film also jokingly – or maybe not exactly jokingly – implies that Al repeatedly turned down historic opportunities that would have made him an A-list pop legend. Rainn Wilson plays the freaky DJ Dr Demento who gave Al his first break, Jack Black shows up briefly to play Wolfman Jack, and Evan Rachel Wood plays 80s-era Madonna whom this film imagines to have had a passionate affair with our hero. Having just portrayed Marilyn Monroe’s mother in Blonde, Nicholson now gets to play Al’s mum, placidly telling her music-obsessed boy things such as: “Stop being who you are and doing the things you love.”īut really it is a long, slow trudge through a lot of zany walk-ons. There are one or two vaguely decent things here: a nice gag about no one recognising Queen bassist John Deacon, and a game performance from Julianne Nicholson. Just as Yankovic made his name with wacky parodies of songs like My Sharona and Another One Bites the Dust, so this movie strains to parody musical films such as Walk the Line, with all the usual cliches: needle-scratch freezeframe voiceover opening (although the cliche there is maybe unintentional), tough upbringing, uncaring parents, breakthrough to fame, substance abuse, crisis and comeback, all of which bears little or no relation to Yankovic’s actual life. But these career progressions are still in the future and Radcliffe has been cast here as the American accordionist and wacky singing turn “Weird” Al Yankovic with frizzy afro and moustache in this laboriously unfunny and pointless spoof biopic, co-written and produced by Yankovic himself. They'll also be happy to see a number of his classic songs performed in the movie, including "Another One Rides the Bus" and "Like a Surgeon." Like many real biopics, this one sags a bit in the middle, but overall it's a relentlessly absurd (dare we say weird) treat of a movie. This month has seen the posthumous release of Alan Rickman’s diaries, which revealed the late star’s opinion about his Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe: “I still don’t think he’s really an actor but he will undoubtedly direct/produce.” Maybe so. Demento's influence on Al, and his first song being recorded in a bathroom. Yankovic fans will notice that there's a little bit of truth in the film, including radio DJ Dr. Radcliffe earnestly plays Yankovic with a little twinkle in his eye, and everyone else seems to be having an equal amount of fun on screen (Wood shines as the villainous Madonna). Taking cues from The Doors, Bohemian Rhapsody, and even a hint of A Star Is Born, Weird flips the script on these ultra-serious music stories and delivers an utterly ridiculous fake chronicle of the notoriously well-behaved musician. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story has it all: emotional standoffs with disapproving parents, a gravelly voiced narrator (courtesy of Diedrich Bader), and a debauched portrait of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll that the real Yankovic is absolutely not known for. This cameo-packed, silliness-stacked movie plays to all the beats of a standard music biopic, with hilarious results. ![]() Fans won’t be disappointed, but the movie is not the best yet made. However, the movie does have a strong cast and is beautifully acted. ![]() Al Yiankovic is in a brutal car crash because of alcohol. They don’t even know each other, and just make out. They make out on the first day they meet, which is a bad influence for teens. Al Yiankovic also has sex with his girlfriend (on the first day he met her) and has a huge, sexy, hard relationship with her. The story mixes up comedy, drama, music, and horror which is too much - I mean, can’t just someone have a simple, beautiful music comedy? Do we need to add action, and horror? I mean, come on people, let’s be a bit reasonable. So expect lots of brutal killings with guns and knives, which involve blood and wounds. The story doesn’t go deep enough and the violence is way over the top. ![]() Some scenes are so stupidly added to the film which end up being from frightening to ludicrous. ![]() This movie may be funny in some scenes but overall - it’s very goofy and silly.
